About Program
About Sevalaya - Sevalaya is a registered Charitable Trust established in 1988 with activities centered in and around the remote Kasuva village located near Tiruninravur in Tiruvallur District, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The organization is professionally managed and governed by a Board of Trustees drawn from industry and social sectors, with a deep commitment to social development. Sevalaya draws its inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and the patriotic Poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar, and their philosophies. Our Vision is to serve the rural poor and transform them for an equitable, happy and fulfilled society with an improved quality of life. At present, Sevalaya serves 2,000 students in and around Kasuva village and runs a home for 148 destitute children and 67 destitute senior citizens. All our services are rendered absolutely free of any charges, without any discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, etc. Sevalaya has implemented all steps to ensure Green Zone. Our campus has been awarded the “Best NGO working for Environment by Tamil Nadu Government in 2012”. About the Program: Presently 2,000 children from 40 villages are studying in Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School. We provide free high quality education to these children. We also provide free books, two sets of uniforms, stationery, other educational aids, and food expenses to our students and some senior citizens. We need sponsorship to provide food to these underprivileged children and senior citizens. The project aims at covering 1,150 beneficiaries comprising 250 people for breakfast (150 hostel children, 70 senior citizens and 30 staff), 650 for lunch (150 hostel children, 70 senior citizens, 150 community college students, 250 kindergarten students and 30 staff) and 250 for dinner (150 hostel children, 70 senior citizens and 30 staff). Cost of breakfast is Rs.25/- per day per person and one meal costs Rs.50/- per day per person. Our current cost is therefore around Rs.51,000 per day, of which we need funding of Rs.13,500 per day under this program since it is a co-sponsorship program. Thus, the funding requirement of the project is Rs.13,500 per day x 100 days = Rs.13,50,000/-. We seek your generous support by joining us as a Sponsor to meet the food expenses of these children and senior citizens.

(2) Swami Vivekananda Boys Home and Mother Teresa Girls Home shelters about 150 orphan and destitute children. (3) Mahatma Gandhi Medical Centre is equipped with separate 12 bed wards for men and women. Free medical camps are periodically organized for the residents and poor villagers. (4) Kasturba Craft Centre provides free training in tailoring to poor rural women. (5) Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Old Age Home shelters 70 destitute, poor senior citizens. (6) Community college provides free vocational training in 7 streams to 150 rural poor youth. (7) We promote organic farming by practising it in our fields and organize free training in organic farming for the local villagers. Sevalaya had opted for a Social Audit conducted by Social Audit Network of UK, coordinated by the Centre for Social Initiatives and Management, CSIM (www.csim.in) to get a quantitative and objective estimate of the impact created by Sevalaya. The auditors conducted a detailed study using surveys, questionnaires and other instruments. The findings of the survey revealed: (1) 100% of the students feel they are never discriminated based on caste or racial bias; (2) 100% of students were convinced that Sevalaya keeps them aware of all the activities in the institution, thereby creating an environment of transparency and trust; (3) All the beneficiaries and stakeholders were fully aware of and committed to the Sevalaya value systems; (4) Among the benefits the students identified from the school in terms of quality education, the top two were reading skills and communication (both spoken and written); (5) The medical records validated that Sevalaya was doing exceptional work in ensuring the good health of the residents of the Children’s Home and that the residents of the Old Age Home were extremely satisfied with the facilities being provided by Sevalaya. To sum up, we request your esteemed organization to consider our proposal favourably. Your gesture will go a long way in encouraging us to carry on our humble contribution in the service of humanity with renewed vigour.
